What Mountain Light Workshop
Participants Have To Say:
“I just returned from your Mountain Light Sequoia workshop and wanted to pass on to David Muench, Justin Black, Yann Nicolas and Mountain Light my extreme pleasure at being able to attend. You all made me, a newcomer to fine digital photography, and terrified at the prospect of having to work with and show my work to such talented professional photographers… you made me very comfortable. I learned a tremendous amount very fast (mostly by having the opportunity to make many mistakes and get answers to questions), and was able to build confidence in my technique and… unfortunately, much more slowly… am beginning to develop an eye for light and composition. David, your great talent and experience is complemented by your ability of putting up with newbies graciously. You made an enjoyable and encouraging experience. Justin and Yann, I was impressed by your joint combination of technical and organizational skills, which made the workshop possible, as well as your artistic abilities and ready answers to my questions. And behind the scenes Denise and the rest of Mountain Light did a great job of making things go smoothly (not an easy task with National Park concessionaires, I understand.) My enjoyable experience with this workshop has definitely changed how I view light and everything around me (I discovered this morning I have fantastic dappled oak sunrises in my wooded front yard), and what I will do with my time. My wife and I are busy planning opportunities for other workshops, and you will see me back again soon, either this fall or next spring in Bishop. So, thank you all very much for a very enjoyable and significant event in my life.”

“Hi Justin,
“I did want to send you a long-overdue Thank You for the tremendous workshop; it was really an amazing experience and probably the highlight of my year.… I’m very much looking forward to seeing you and David and Yann again in June.… You rock, I appreciate all your help.”
Kelly O., workshop participant
“Thanks again for the workshop w/John Shaw recently. It was a trip I’ll never forget. That won’t be the last time I go out to the Sierras, nor the last time I do a workshop at Mountain Light.”
John B., 2008 participant
“I wanted to thank all of you for an AWESOME experience. I had the most wonderful time and am still in the afterglow of being in that beautiful part of the world spending my time attempting to capture all its beauty. I’ve been looking through my pictures and it’s funny, but the one I think is my favorite wasn’t even any of the ones I shared [in the critiques]… It’s really pretty. Anyhow, I really am going to try and come again in the fall and bring my brother along this time… Thanks again for all your wonderful help, advice and sense of humor. Take good care!”

“Hey Justin, Just wanted to say thanks for the great workshop with John Shaw last weekend. I spent some time reviewing the nearly 500 images I shot (a new record for me) during the course of three days. Even if some of the images weren’t what I remembered seeing, they all brought back some great memories. Thanks again – you guys run a first class program!”

“Wanted to let you know what an amazing experience I had last weekend! I learned so much and am now willing to shoot RAW, learn Photoshop and Lightroom – a seismic shift! Of course, there are a few equipment issues to be dealt with first and we all know what the first purchase should be!!
“You thought of everything and took such great care of us. I particularly appreciate your willingness to set my camera, answer my questions and always with patience and never once giving me that look that says ‘how have you lived so long?!’ I’m hoping that in time I will be able to produce photos that would make you proud. What is the best for me is that I learned so much and see how much more I have to learn and, rather than feeling overwhelmed, I feel excited about the journey. In short, I'm hooked!
“Hope to see you in another workshop!”

“I wanted to thank you for the excellent job you, and all the Mountain Light staff, did during last weekend’s workshop. I know Galen and Barbara would be proud of your efforts.”

“Your workshop was a great experience. I knew John Shaw to be great, but was REALLY impressed by your staff who assisted him to make the workshop run so smoothly.”

Sent to Jack Dykinga, Mountain Light Workshops instructor:
“Dear Jack, before too much time went by I wanted to thank you again for all of your help at your recent Mountain Light workshop in Bishop. I had a great time and learned a lot. I particularly enjoyed our conversations and you willingness to share insights. Your critiques were well worth the price of admission. I’ve found that I’m taking more time composing and thinking about composition before actually releasing the shutter. I was back in Bishop a few weeks after the workshop and the conditions had already changed dramatically. I’ve been spending time studying your images from Arizona. So many truly great images to admire and learn from. I’m already thinking of signing up for another one of your workshops, maybe Boulder Mt., or Bryce….”

“To all the Staff and Instructors of the Mountain Light Gallery,
“It appears that [someone else] beat me to the punch in thanking you for putting on such a professional workshop. All of the Gallery folks as well as John Shaw were tremendous and certainly giving when asked. I have no idea when I would have been able to even see some of the places we got to photograph while there. The areas chosen to shoot were amazing. I’m sure each of us got to take something of value away from our gathering over and above the images we should all be proud to print and display. If pressed to choose the most valuable bit of instruction, it would be extremely difficult as everything was so well planned and executed, but I would have to go with the critique sessions. That is where all the instruction came together….”

“I found the course extremely valuable. I particularly benefitted from the discussions on exposure and composition, both in the field and through the critique process. John Shaw, Justin Black, and Yann Nicolas, were invaluable resources. I am anxious to begin applying what I have learned. Finally, I appreciate the organization and attention to detail. There was no time wasted.”

“I think the course was awesome. Jack Dykinga has an amazing ability to share his knowledge. His prepared instruction was excellent, but his on-the-spot judgement was equally valuable. The image critique sessions were excellent and brought us all together and left us with many guidelines to apply to our own work. I think the critique sessions were probably most valuable to me. The course was so well managed thanks to the Mountain Light staff. I want to express gratitude to Justin, Dean, and Yann, who were always available if I needed them. The staff made this workshop really work, and I can’t say enough about the Mountain Light folks. I hope to come back!”

“My goal was to acquire as much info as possible on landscape photography in all areas. Jack Dykinga’s knowledge of light and composition is truly incredible. I felt the most valuable lesson was recognizing light and how it plays within your frame – the balance of cool light vs. warm light and how it can draw the eye through the composition in conjunction with subject elements. Both Justin and Yann were very knowledgeable in all areas.”

“I took a workshop there last fall with you and Robert Holmes and you set me up with a graduated neutral density filter… I just wanted to thank you for your advice. I am very pleased with the colors I can attain using the filter.
“Also wanted to mention that since taking the workshop there I got a job as Grandfather Mountain’s photographer. It is in Blowing Rock NC, a privately owned International Biosphere Reserve. To have unlimited access to the rugged mountain and all its panoramic views during the best hours of dusk and dawn has for me been a dream come true.
“I wanted to thank you and Yann (and I have already thanked Bob Holmes) in particular for the instruction, tips and critiques I received because that workshop inspired me and the things I learned there are still helping me reach new levels in my personal photography pursuits.”
Sincerely,
Helen Hopper
“This workshop has set the bar at an incredibly high level… I can only view any future workshop — at Mountain Light or elsewhere — as merely a supplement to this one!”

“Thank you for a wonderful weekend and opening my eyes to new ways to see the light!”

“I can see myself improving in thinking through composition and exposure, and in the results.… Organization and execution of the class was good, staff very attentive.”

“Just a quick note to let you know how much I enjoyed the workshop with you and Frans [Lanting]. It was top-notch in every respect and I’m sending a separate e-mail to Frans to let him know as well. I learned a great deal and was duly humbled, as expected!
“…We stayed in Bishop for about a week after the workshop and journeyed out in all directions. Thanks for the tips on where to go.
“Best of luck with all of Mountain Light’s future plans, and thanks for doing such a great job!”

“Many thanks for this past weekend for all your efforts in making the seminar a successful experience for me. Please convey my appreciation to all your Mountain Light staff but especially to Dean. The people at Mountain Light were to a person always cheerful, willing to converse on many topics and always helpful, and professional. The thank you is also extended to Londie who assisted in meanginful ways but in addition brought sheer entertainment with her persona. The customer was indeed supreme at your facility.
“I probably was the person with the least experience, the most camera problems (sensor dirt), and with the smallest amount of camera gear in my bag but I certainly profited from John and the weekend in general. There are many new tools now in my bag to put to use in the near future.”
Best Regards,
Bruce Elliott
Last spring I attended one of your workshops with Jack Dykinga. It was one of the best run and most organized workshops I’ve attended. I had a wonderful time, learned some new techniques, and ended up with a few good images. Thank you.

“I attended the workshop with Justin [Black] at the end of last month and I wanted to let you all know that the support, content, structure and feedback was excellent. Justin imparted a tremendous amount of knowledge, and he did a wonderful job with the critiques, which I found most beneficial.
“I spent the week following the workshop in Yosemite and I was able to shoot with greater confidence and get some very nice images.
“The Mountain Light team provided great support and helped to assure an excellent experience overall.
“I look forward to my next workshop at Mountain Light!”
All the best,
Mike M.
“Dear Justin,
“I… wanted to take the time to say THANK YOU for the patience and expert advice you gave to me at the workshop. I know that I sort of monopolized your attention and Bob [Holmes’] as much as I could but I think everyone else was CRAZY not to learn as much from your expertise as they possibly could!!!! I guess because I had to cross the country to be able to study under your & Bob's talents that I possibly had a greater appreciation for exactly who you are!!! For me it was a double blessing because Bob helped me get outside of the box concerning art / movement creativity in photo opportunities and you helped me sooo much with landscapes and color creativity. I loved several of the reflective water pics I got in “your spot.” Both of you are masters in your field’s of expertise and I greatly appreciated the opportunity to learn from you.
“Anyway, I deeply appreciated your time. I have thanked Bob as well. I have brand new eyes to photo opportunities now and gained a LOT of valuable information there. I have tried my neutral density filter out several times and actually have done pretty well with it. I guess the bold line is a plus for beginners! You were right, yet again!…
“…Take Care and thank you soooo much again for all of your help and advice. I have extreme respect and admiration for your skill in photography and your eye for color. The workshop was professionally executed and profoundly effective. Exceptionally well done!”
Thanks!!!!!
Helen M.
“What a fantastic experience this workshop turned out to be! Each of you was simply very gracious, patient, generous with your skills, knowledge and experience. You certainly gave me far more than my money's worth and the group as a whole was a true pleasure. I learned a remarkable amount from all of the other participants as well and found the critique sessions to be (by far) the most useful and instructive part of the program – even if “The beatings will continue until morale improves!”…
“…I am very much looking forward to the Fall 2007 seminar with Jack [Dykinga] and all of you at Zion in November and will send my deposit soon. I have much to work on and to continue to learn and I will be anxious to show the improvement in my knowledge, technique and vision after I have further absorbed and diligently practiced what you so willingly tried to teach me.”
Thanks again for a wonderful time,
Mike K.
“I wanted to take a moment to let you all know how much I enjoyed this past weekend’s workshop. The amount of valuable information you managed to compress into such a limited amount of time is remarkable. Your attention to the smallest detail was apparent through the three day workshop. The firm (but compassionate) adherence to the schedule insured that we got the most out of the astounding venues around Bishop. But of equal note is the quality of all the individuals involved. It is extremely unusual in my experience to find a group of people who are as passionate about what they do as you all obviously are.
“My thanks you all for a most rewarding experience.”
Sincerely,
Bill E.
“Hi Justin,
“I just want to thank all of you at Mountain Light for the fabulous time I had at the Bob Holmes workshop! The staff was wonderful, and were there every step of the way to help. I learned so much from not only Bob, but from the staff and other workshop members. It is an experience that I would highly recommend to others, and hope to experience again soon. Although my images need a lot of work, I think that I learned a lot about what makes a great picture. I will aspire to keep improving and I again thank you all for a very fun, well organized, and insightful time.
“And to Bob – I really enjoyed your images, but most of all, I enjoyed your great sense of humor and great spirit! Thanks for sharing your expertise with us wannabe's!
“Thanks all!”
Chris T.
“Just a short note to thank you for the best seminar I have ever attended. I knew many things from the Camera Club, but learned a wealth of information, which I shall try to impart to my images. Soooo helpful to me. Again, many thanks for all you help.
“May your days always be filled with sunshine, colors and light.”
Fondly-
Judith D.
