Galen Rowell established a legacy of inspirational and highly effective photographic education at Mountain Light, having shared his passion, techniques, and vision with numerous students over the years. Under the leadership of photographer Justin Black, our General Manager, Mountain Light continues in Galen’s footsteps with a workshop program featuring world-renowned photographers including John Shaw, David Muench, Jack Dykinga, Bob Krist, Jeff Foott, Brenda TharpElizabeth Carmel, Frans Lanting, Nevada Wier, and Pat O’Hara among others. Following the high standards Galen established for his own program, Mountain Light Workshops participants are assured an experience full of technical insights and aesthetic enlightenment, in addition to a welcoming, upbeat learning environment that is just plain fun.

“While I’ve taken other photo workshops and seminars offered by other companies, Mountain Light workshops are BY FAR the best and most professionally run ones I’ve attended. They are very well organized and executed with excellent support given to all participants by the entire staff at Mountain Light. To me, they are the gold standard of photography workshops (and I’m talking about actual workshops, not photo tours or weekend seminars).”

The scenery in the Eastern Sierra Nevada is breathtaking, and access to numerous scenic locations is easy, making it a fantastic venue for photography workshops. Those who followed Galen’s work over the years will know that at the heart of his favorite photographic locations on Earth lies Bishop, California. In a region known for wonders such as Mono Lake, ancient bristlecone pines, Mount Whitney and the Eastern Sierra escarpment in America’s deepest valley, Bishop is an outdoor photographer’s dream. Our gallery features a comfortable workshop room complete with digital and film projection facilities including a 16-foot screen, and we offer excellent support for photographers entering the new world of digital photography. The Mountain Light staff looks forward to warmly welcoming you to the gallery for a workshop in the near future. Please watch the website for developments.

“Justin, I want to thank you, John Shaw, Yann, Dean and everyone at Mountain Light for an incredible experience. Mountain Light knows how to do things right. Everything was so well organized; I do not know how it could have been better. Everyone was so patient and willing to share their knowledge and experience, without holding back. Everything I wanted to learn was covered, from technique, to gear, to workflow, and even what software to use. I read somewhere that my photography would benefit more by taking a workshop than by buying a new lens and they were absolutely right. Thanks again, I will be back.”

Mountain Light offers a variety of photographic seminars and workshops throughout the year, in the Eastern Sierra and exciting photographic locations further afield, to meet the needs of everyone from the enthusiastic amateur to the working professional looking to sharpen skills. Classes are designed to give color film and digital photographers a deeper understanding of how to make best use of natural light, composition, and techniques from the classic to the cutting edge.

Starting in 2007, all Mountain Light workshops will be packaged inclusive of accommodations and all meals. Prorated fees are available for those who wish to make their own lodging, RVing, or camping arrangements.

“Justin, I wanted to thank you for a great experience for me at the photography workshop… I learned an incredible amount from you in a short time – both technically and artistically. I really enjoyed the places selected for the shoots and the opportunity to go back to the iris field for a second try after having a critique was very valuable. I felt my pictures were markedly better that time. I hope to have the opportunity to take another workshop with you in the near future. I was inspired to continue to develop my interest in photography.

The Bishop Gallery

Mountain Light Gallery in Bishop, California, is located in the spectacular Eastern Sierra, one hour south of Mono Lake, and an hour north of Mt. Whitney. Workshops taught out of our Bishop Gallery feature field trips to local natural areas with critiques of work created by participants in the field. Beyond the learning factor, students produce very impressive photographs during the field sessions, get to know their favorite photographers, and make new friends who share their passion for outdoor photography!

“A note to repeat my thanks to you for your artistic assistance. This was the best learning opportunity I have experienced. The information provided on techniques, equipment, software, etc. was valuable. Your technical skills and management of the workshop was fantastic and provided a comprehensive picture of what I want to achieve in this arena.… You and your images are an inspiration and Mountain Light has a wonderful asset.”
